Regulation of Body Weight and Food Intake Flashcards
Anabolic pathways for E homeostasis
Eat more
Inhibit E expenditure
*overeating will put you in + E balance –> accumulation of adipose tissue
Catabolic pathways for E homeostasis
Eat less
Stimulate E burned
*overeating will put you in + E balance –> accumulation of adipose tissue
Lateral nucleus of hypothalamus
LH = Hunger center
*ablate it in a rodent: - they stop eating
Ventromedial Nucleus
VMN = satiety Center
- tells you when full
*ablate it: cant stop eating
Leptin
Signal from body to tell your body to keep catabolic and anabolic pathways in balance
- Stimulates catabolic
- Inhibits Anabolic
(you shouldnt be hungry)
Tells your body we gots enough! Enough is enough.
- maybe weight prone people are resistant to leptin
Arcuate nucleus
NPY/AgRP
- stimulates neurons in PVN/LHA, NPYR –>
increase food intake
Decrease E expenditure
POMC/CART
- stimulates MCR in PVN/LHA –>
decrease food intake
Increase E expenditure
Leptin + insulin stimulate which system? Inhibit which?
Stimulates:
- catabolic
(eat less)
Inhibits:
- anabolic
(eat more)
*you are full/have food, stop eating
Ghrelin and PYY and
GLP-1
Hormones
Ghrelin from stomach
- stimulates appetite center to make you hungrier
PYY+GLP-1 from distal ileum
- Satiety hormones
- meal to meal regulation
These hormones are counterbalancing eachother
Ghrelin and PYY effects on:
NPY/AgRP and POMC/CART
Ghrelin + (stim) NPY/AgRP
- inhibits POMC/CART
- -> Increase food intake
PYY - Inhibits NPY/AgRP - Stimulates POMC/CART --> Decrease food intake
Responses to seeing food, then eating food, what happens to their brain?
Obese resistant
- see food, want food
- eat food, then signaling goes down
Obese Prone
- see food, dont want food as much
- eat food, signaling goes way up
*reactions are completely different
Homeostatic signals that feed hypothalamus
- adiposity signals
- metabolites
- gut peptides
- gastric distention
