As an active flight instructor, what does TSA require you to do? To start training a U.S. flight student.
You need to verify citizenship
But, you can take someone on a “discovery” flight without verifying citizenship of background verification.
If you’re going to do more flight instruction…
You need to verify citizenship - passport, birth certificate
Log that as endorsement in the back of their logbook that you’ve verified citizenship

When would you not need a bi annual flight review?
Within the 24 calendar months you have:
A proficiency check or practical test by approved FAA examiner
A practical test conducted by examiner for a flight instructor cert, and added rating to flight instructor cert, renewal of flight instructor cert, or reinstatement of flight instructor cert.
Completed a renewal of your flight instructor cert in 61.197, do not need the hour of ground training
What is a bi annual flight review?
1 hour of flight training, 1 hour of ground training.
Review maneuvers and procedures that are necessary for pilot to demonstrate safe exercise of the privileges of the certificate.
No person may act as PIC of an aircraft except within 24 calendar months they have accomplished a flight review, and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor stating they have satisfactorily completed the flight review
Flight experience for Commercial ASEL rating
At least 250 hours of flight time that consists of at least:
100 hours in powered aircraft, at least 50 in a plane
100 hours PIC which included at least 50 in airplanes, 50 hours XC of which 10 are in planes.
10 hours instrument training using view limiting device
10 hours complex planes, turbine, or TAA
One 2 hour xc flight in single engine during daytime that has a total straight line distance of more than 100 miles from departure.
2 hour xc flight in single engine at night with total straight line distance of more than 100 miles from departure.
3 hours in single engine plane with authorized instructor in prep for practical test within preceding 2 calendar months from month of test.
10 hours solo or 10 hours of flight time performing PIC with authorized instructor
One xc flight of not less than 300 miles total distance. Landings at minimum three points, one of which is at least 250 miles from original departure point.
5 hours in night VFR with 10 TOL’s in the traffic pattern with operating control tower.
Aeronautical experience for PPL
40 hours total flight time
- 20 with an instructor
- 10 hours of solo
3 hours of xc flight training in single engine
3 hours of night flight training in single engine that includes
- one xc flight over 100 miles total distance
- 10 TOL’s to full stop in traffic pattern at an airport,
3 hours of flight training in single engine on the control and maneuvering solely by reference to instruments.
3 hours with an instructor in prep for practical test, which must have been performed within 2 calendar months of practical test
10 hours solo flight time conditioning of at least:
- 5 hours solo xc
- one solo xc flight of 150nm total distance with full stop landings at 3 point. One segment of the flight consisting of straight line distance of more than 50nm between takeoff and landing locations
- 3 TOL’s to full stop in the traffic pattern with operating control tower
A commercial helicopter pilot wants his ASEL PPL. How many hours are required?
30 HOURS

To be eligible for a flight instructor certificate, the applicant must:
Hold a commercial or ATP cert with an appropriate category and class that is appropriate to instructor rating sought
Hold instrument rating on pilots certificate if seeking a flight instructor with an airplane category
Has a logbook endorsement certifying the applicant has received the required ground and flight training and has been found competent to pass the practical test
Logged at least 15 hours PIC in the category and class of aircraft that is appropriate to flight instructor rating sought
