IFR Requirements Flashcards
When can you log instrument time?
A person may log instrument time only for that flight time when the person operates the aircraft solely by the reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions
When can an instructor log instrument time?
An authorized instructor may log instrument time when conducting instrument flight instruction in actual instrument flight conditions
To meet recent instrument experience requirements, what information must be recorded in the persons logbook?
Location and type of each instrument approach accomplished
The name of the safety pilot, if required
If you are training towards a certificate or rating using a simulator, FTD, or ATD, what needs to be logged?
An authorized instructor is present to observe and signs the persons logbook to verify the time and content of the session
When using a simulator for IFR recency requirements, what do you need to log?
Log the training device, time, and content
What recency of experience is needed to act as PIC under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums for VFR?
61.57
66 HITS
In the preceding 6 months:
6 instrument approaches
Holding procedures and tasks
Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigational systems
Can you get your IFR recency to act as PIC in a sim?
It can be completed in a FFS, ATD, or FTD if the device represents the category of aircraft.
Need to be performed in simulated instrument conditions. Flight instructor is not needed.
If you are not current looking back 6 months, how do you become current?
You can still log 6 HITS with a safety pilot (under simulated conditions, or examiner, or instructor.
In order to be a safety pilot you need:
At least a PPL with appropriate category and class
Have adequate vision forward and to each side of aircraft
Aircraft must have a dual control system
What if you are not current looking back 12 months?
You need an IPC (instrument proficiency check)
By a CFII, examiner, or other approved person. Guidelines are in the ACS
What is required to carry passengers as PIC?
3 TOL’s in category and class in last 90 days
At night, 3 TOL’s to full stop
What is needed to act as PIC?
Flight review in last 24 months
61.56
Minimum aeronautical experience for instrument rating
50 hours xc PIC - of which 10 are in airplanes
40 hours actual or simulated instrument time
- of which, 15 hours with CFII
- including one XC flight of
* 250NM along airways or directed by ATC
* an instrument approach at each airport
* 3 different kinds of approaches using
navigation systems
* with a filed IFR flight plan
- 3 hours instrument flight training in the last 2 calendar months prior to practical test
- No more than 20 hours of total instrument time can be credited in a full flight simulator, FTD, or ATD
