Gneral Melodic (Horizontal) Principles of Counterpoint (CP)

A

l. Total melodic range of CP: diatonic 10th
2. Only diatonic notes may be used. ( In minor, the altered forms of scale degrees VI and VII may be used.)
J. Widest melodic interval: minor 6th (but 8ve may be used, provided next note moves in opposite direction).
4, No repeated notes.
5. Melody should reverse direction following a wide leap.
6. Augmented melodic intervals – including the tritone (+ 4th) – are not allowed, though diminished melodic intervals (including the o 5th) may be used in special circumstances.
7. No more than 2 consecutive leaps in the sarne direction.
8. 3 melodic notes in the same direction should not span (otuline) any 7th, any 9th, oran +4th.
9. Conjunct motion is preferable.
10. The CP melodic phrase should have an unrepeated high and/or low point, if possible.
