Cap 6 - The Anticipation Flashcards
The Anticipation
It should be noted that anticipations appear considerably less frequently than suspensions-
and than most of the other kinds of nonharmonic tones.
Whereas in a suspension a note is retained longer than expected and then resolved, an anticipation involves sounding a note of the ensuing harmony earlier than expectedthat is, before the point at which that harmony is actually reached.
The anticipation is seen most frequently in cadences, where it has a somewhat ornamental character.
Parallelism
In fourth-species counterpoint, syncopated parallel octaves and 5ths are avoidedjust
as simultaneous parallel octaves and 5ths are in 1 : 1 counterpoint (Examples 26a and
b). The pattern at e implies parallel 6ths, rather than 5ths, and is therefore perfectly
acceptable.
FIFTH SPECIES (florid)
This specie is nothing but a recapitulation and combination of all the preceding ones.
There is nothing new that need to be explained, except that one should take the utmost care to write a singable, melodic line.
RHYTHMIC ACTIVITY DIVIDED BETWEEN THE VOICES
In all the exercises done so far, except those in I: 1, one ofthe voices carried the burden of rhythmic activity while the other moved in longer values. It is possible, however, to convert a 1 : 1 version to 2: 1, 3 : 1, or 4: I with the rhythmic activity distributed between the two voices as desired. Example 32 demonstrates this process.
