1) In writing an answer, one should first examine the subject or motive carefully, noting especially the scale steps involved, the harmonies implied, any distinctive features, rhythmic and metric patterns. and overall construction.
2) As we have seen, these fall into two general categories:
(1) the dominant note at or near the beginning of the subject;
(2) a
modulauon in thc last portion. lf neither of these dements is present, the imitation
will be entircly al thc 5th and should pn:scnt no problems. If either element is
involvcd. the answcr must be adjw;tcd accordingly.
