REGENERATING PLACES - LESSON 4 - HOW CAN CHANGE TO FUNCTION AND DEMOGRAPHY BE MEASURED Flashcards
What are the 4 key ways in which geographers measure changes within a place
Land use change
Employment trends
Demographic changes
Levels of deprivation
(census data)
What are the advantages with using census data
Carried out every 10 years
Most wide-ranging survey of population
Numerous indicators which provide a detailed snapshot
Anonymous - only available after 100 years
What are the disadvantages using census data
So large-scale it takes 3 years to process data - so it may be out of date
Anonymity could mean that there could be 3 people on one response
Is it necessary? are there better ways to obtain data eg. Doctor surgery registrations
Only done every 10 years, doesn’t allow for change
What is the index of multiple deprivation used for
Used by central Government and especially by local authorities to target regeneration, aid, to allocate resources to places and people and target hotspots of crime
How many areas are measured by the IMD and how many residents or households does each area have
32844 small areas or neighbourhoods
1500 residents each OR
650 households
What does the IMD measure
Income, employment, health, education, crime, living environment etc…
