Why was Regeneration needed in Newham?
(social, economic, environmental)

A

SOCIAL:

  • 40% of Newham semi-skilled or unskilled employment
  • 34% of Newham with no educational qualifications in 2001 — compared to Londons 24%
  • unaffordable housing — 56% of housing is rented
  • one of the most overcrowded areas in England

ECONOMIC:

  • only 40% of Newham employed full time
  • incomes in Newham are lower than elsewhere in London or England — out of 34000 areas — one of the most deprived

ENVIRONMENTAL

  • abandoned land had been used as dumping grounds
  • land was contaminated from previous industrial pollution
  • soil contained chemicals used in armament from WWII — mercury
  • river lea & its canals were polluted with chemicals and waste
  • surface electricity pylons were built across open spaces

EAST VILLAGE

A

repurposed 2017 olympic village
newham borough council had to rehome the 300 people living there for Olympic Village to be built

Success:
- Now home to 6000 people and 23 businesses
- 2820 homes — 2000 more planned
- 3 childrens play areas
- 35 acres of open land and an orchard
