Engagement - definition
The degree to which people will help to shape, participate in, and facilitate projects & issues
Factors affecting engagement
AGE: linked to length of residence
SEX: women & gender non-conforming people may feel more unsafe in the area. stay at home parents interact w/ community more
ETHNICITY: discrimination in a community leads to lack of trust in community — may feel underrepresented in politics
LENGTH OF RESIDENCE: new residents & students will not have as much attachment to the area
DEPRIVATION: higher levels associated with anti-establishment views — renters and people on temporary housing may feel less “at home” than landowners
How is ENGAGEMENT measured
ELECTION TURNOUT:
- local election: local mp to represent your constituency
- general election: vote for a political party to employ a new prime minister
- referendum: vote for/against on questions the gov. cant decide upon w/o public opinion
MORE ENGAGEMENT = MORE INVESTMENT FROM POLITICIANS
PEOPLE WHO DO NOT VOTE PRODUCE VOTER APATHY — Gov. can do what they want w/o reaction — corruption
How do the EU contribute to Regeneration?
approx. €5.8b per year from EU to spend in the UK for various community based projects
assistance in planning on improving transport connections
How is Regeneration different in Britain post-Brexit?
‘Build Back Better’ to build & improve communities — £2 million per council
local produce boost — buy local — improve smaller communities
money from paying for the EU membership can be used for regeneration projects
Example of Positive Engagement
Grampound Community Shop
2008, council sought residents views about a proposal to build 69 new houses in the village — overwhelmingly supported
- 1/3 of the housing was classed as affordable
- residents felt the new population would help to maintain village services
- developers worked with the council on the design & held public meetings to gauge support
Example of Negative Engagement
Cornwall Wind Turbines
Cornwall council built them — sparked protests — claimed it ruined the countryside
- persuaded by an offer of £15k annually from the energy company for community projects
