1833- escaped slave. Writes the “North Star” newspaper, advises the president and goes into lecture circuit.
William L. Garrison
White radical, writes “the liberation” newspaper. Wanted to end slavery and give blacks civil rights.
Sam Houston
President of “Lone Star Republic”. Captures Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, but lets him go.
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna
Leader of Mexico army during the Mexican-American war in 1946 and the Texas Revolt.
Harriet Tubman
Born into slavery. Escaped when she was adult because she heard she was being sold farther south. She went back to the south 19 times after she escaped, and brought back 300 slaves- never losing 1.
Susan B. Anthony
Teacher and abolitionist. Very strong in the women’s right movement. Arrested numerous times for stranding out against women’s rights.
Horace Mann
Believed in the idea of free education for everyone. Said rich should pay more taxes to make it so. Made schools free of religion, and trained teachers and females. 1850- free education in north but not in south.
Seneca Falls convention
Convention used to talk about women’s rights held in Seneca Falls. Elizabeth Stanton spoke there along with many other women.
Reasons for moving to Texas
Form own government, so that they don’t have to obey USA laws or rules set by constitution and government.
Oregon Trail
Trail mapped out by mountain men. 250,000-500,000 use the trail. 1840’s was big time of use for settlers moving west. If they went to Oregon, they could have 640 acres free
Texas Annexation
War of Mexico 1846-1848. 13,000 soliders die, 11,000 from environment. We want the land, so we take over Mexico City. Give Mexico $30,000,000 for all their territory. Manifest destiny is achieved after 72 years.
Government policy toward native Americans.
Indian Reform- “not worth our concern or our time.” Move Indians out west to the “Great American Desert” in hopes they will die off. Once we realize what good land it is we move them again off the land. In 1828 we take all their land, they sue us and we’re found guilty. Still make them lead, and force Indians to walk trail of tears.
Manifest Destiny
Belief that God wants us to move coast to coast. The expansion would involve not only territorial expansion but the progress of liberty and individual economic opportunity as well. We were willing to kill Indians in the way and get rid of anything else that would stop of from succeeding. We achieved it after 72 years with the Mexican-American war.
Nat Turner
1831- black slave preacher. Killed 60+ m/w/c slave owners. Groupies hung, himself hung and skinned.
