What were Sino-Soviet Relations like between 1962-66?
A
- Chinese War with India 1962 – USSR supplied India with military aircrafts and diplomatic support
- Cuban Missile Crisis 1962, Mao said that the placement of weapons in Cuba was rash and when Khrushchev backed down, he called it surrender
- Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 – not happy about signing this treaty with US and Britain

What Happened with China’s WMD programme between 1962-66?
A
- After the withdrawal of soviet experts China continue developing nuclear weapons and in 1964 for the first time test the atomic bomb
- 1967 they first test the hydrogen bomb, and this concerned the USSR and the balance of the world
- Mao called WMDs ‘paper tigers’ meaning he’s not concerned they’d be used

Vietnam War and Xinjiang?
A
- War began in 1960 due to NLF and Vietcong (communist North) wanted to take South, fearful of another SE Asian country becoming communist USA supplied advisors, arms, after the bay of Tonkin incident when a USA warship fought a North Vietnamese ship, they entered
- China was cautious as they didn’t want a repeat of Korea so supplied Arms and anti-aircraft units against USA bombs
- Xinjiang – 60,000 Uighur Muslims crossed into Tajikistan, China accused USSR of encouraging this to destabilise China,
