• Cuban Missile Crisis 1962, Mao said that the placement of weapons in Cuba was rash and when Khrushchev backed down, he called it surrender
• Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 – not happy about signing this treaty with US and Britain

What Happened with China’s WMD programme between 1962-66?

• After the withdrawal of soviet experts China continue developing nuclear weapons and in 1964 for the first time test the atomic bomb
• 1967 they first test the hydrogen bomb, and this concerned the USSR and the balance of the world
• Mao called WMDs ‘paper tigers’ meaning he’s not concerned they’d be used
