reforestation - pack 16 Flashcards
describe a young forest with respect to how it takes in and releases co2
turning co2 into wood
what is the relationship between respiration and photosynthesis
respiration will be less than photosynthesis
a young forest system is
a net absorber of co2
what happens as the trees (plantation) gets older
the system will move towards a balance between photosynthesis and respiration and the forest will be no longer a net absorber and a carbon store with carbon locked up in the biomass
how would the earths forests be used as a carbon store
could soak up extra co2 as increases co2 concentrations and higher temp stimulate photosynthesis leading to extra growth
what is the problem with using the earths forests being used as a carbon store
there will be a limit to how much or for how long the worlds forests can soak up extra co2
describe what actions can be taken to slow down further increases in atmospheric co2 concentrations
planting trees, less use of fossil fuels, inspiring energy efficiency, capturing co2 and putting it in the ocean - microscopic algae act as carbon sinks
what are other problems that we are facing when trying to find green alternative energies
manufacture and instillation of renewable energy sources (wind farms) will affect emissions (people consider them unsightly and a danger to flying birds)
