energy flow - lqc 13 Flashcards
productivity
the rate of generation of biomass in an ecosystem
GPP
the tears at which energy is incorporated into biomass by plants
NPP
the rate at which energy is transferred into biomass that make up new plant biomass
biomass
the amount of dry mass of all the organisms in an ecosystem
why is 100% of light energy falling on a lead not converted into biomass
reflection, incorrect wavelength colour of light, light not hitting the chloroplast or it is transmitted, light in excess- already at max photosynthesis so no more light can be used
how is energy lost between producers and primary consumers
not all available food gets eaten, some i digested food remains in faeces, much of food absorbed by the consumer is used in respiration
why is the transfer of energy more efficient between primary and secondary consumers
most of herbivore is eaten by the carnivore, herbivore provides protein rich diet which is more easily digested
