out of balance - pack 16 Flashcards
why would the carbon cycle be out of balance
- combustion of fossil fuels
- deforestation
what is coal and how is it formed
coal is a fossil fuel- formed from the wood of trees that lived millions of years ago therefore a product of photosynthesis; the wood didn’t decay for release the co2 as they fell into anaerobic conditions which fungi and algae couldn’t grow therefore carbon is locked in the coal
what can stores of coal be known as
carbon sinks
how long has the carbon been stored away (net removal)
after a million years
peat bags are formed by
non decayed small plants. peat bogs are also carbon sinks
what happens when we extract and burn coal , other fossil fuels and peat bogs
the carbon released as co2 has been at of circulation for millions of years
what is the consequence of burning fossils field at a much faster rate than they are forming
increase in global co2 emissions
