photosynthesis - lqc 12a Flashcards
chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
what does the arrow mean in photosynthesis equation
energy from light and in the presence of chlorophyll
what is photolysis
the splitting of water using the energy from sunlight, hydrogen ions, electrons and oxygen are released
how is the hydrogen from the water stored
the hydrogen reacts with the co2 the co2 is reduced to form carbohydrate glucose
how is glucose used
it can be immediately used in aerobic respiration to provide energy it can be converted into sucrose for transport around the plant, can be stored as starch (as amylose and amylopectin) or converted into cellulose and other organic compounds (lipids, amino acids and nucleic acid)
