Stops FSH

Why does increasing the level of oestrogen in a woman’s body stop her getting pregnant?
It stops FSH
So no eggs can mature
What is a contraceptive?
Something that prevents pregnancy
What is an oral contraceptive?
A ‘pilll’ that is swallowed to prevent pregnancy
The first version of the pill had high levels of what in it?
Oestrogen
Progesterone
What were the side-effects of high oestrogen and progesterone in the first version of the pill?
Blood clots
What does the new version of the pill contain and how is this better than the first version?
A lower dose of oestrogen so fewer side effects.
What are the PROs of the contraceptive pill?
Very effective at preventing pregnancy
Reduces the risk of getting some types of cancer
What are the CONs of the contraceptive pill?
There is still a small chance of getting pregnant.
IT can cause headaches
Doesn’t protect against STD. (sexually transmitted disease)
What are the advantages of the ‘progesterone-only pill’?
Fewer side effects
