Reducing children’s implicit racial bias through exposure to positive outgroup exemplars.
Can exposure to positive outgroup exemplars (individuals from a racial group the child is not typically exposed to) reduce children’s implicit racial biases?
Method
exposed 5- to 7-year-old children to positive exemplars of outgroup members
Implicit Association Test (IAT): To measure unconscious racial biases by assessing their reaction times when associating Black and White faces with positive and negative traits.
Explicit Bias Measures: Asking children to express preferences for faces or groups, to assess any changes in overt attitudes.
Results
Children who were exposed to positive outgroup exemplars (e.g., Black individuals in positive roles) showed a significant reduction in implicit racial bias
There was no significant change in children’s explicit preferences for outgroup faces
