Redox Reactions Flashcards
How is the oxidation number for hydrogen assigned?
In compounds hydrogen is given the oxidation number +1. Unless it is bonded to a metal in which case it is -1.
Define reduction
involves the gain of electrons within a species
How is the oxidation number for oxygen assigned?
Oxygen is given the oxidation number of -2. Unless it is bonded to another oxygen in a peroxide bond (oxygen-oxygen single bond). Then it is -1.
How is the oxidation number for an atom assigned?
The oxidation number of an atom in its neutral elemental state is zero.
How is the oxidation number for a monotomic ion assigned?
The oxidation number for a monatomic ion is its charge
What involves the loss of electrons from a species?
oxidation
