Common Ion Effect and Precipitation Flashcards
What is precipitation?
o Precipitation is when a solid solute spontaneously forms from a solution
Describe the result when the Qsp > Ksp
precipitate will form
Describe the result when the Qsp < Ksp
no precipitate will form
What is a super-saturated solution?
A solution with a concentration higher than the saturation concentration is called a super-saturated solution
Relate Qsp to Ksp when the system is at equilibrium
Qsp = Ksp
How do you make a super-saturated solution?
Made by making a saturated solution at a higher temperature where the solubility is higher and then slowly cooling the solution to a lower temperature where the solubility is lower
What is the common ion effect?
o Because the solubility of an ionic compound depends on the product of the concentrations of the ions, this solubility can be greatly affected if there are already some of those ions present in the solution
Relate Qsp to Ksp when no precipitate will form
Qsp < Ksp
Relate Qsp to Ksp when precipitate will form
Qsp > Ksp
Describe the result when the Qsp = Ksp
the system is at equilibrium
