Redox equations Flashcards
What is oxidation and reduction?
is the loss of electrons
is the gain of electrons
What are redox reactions?
are reactions where oxidation and reduction are both taking place at the same time
What are half equations?
are equations showing the oxidation or reduction reactions separately
What’s an oxidation state/number?
is a number given to each atom or iron in a compound to show the degree of oxidation
What are the states when oxidation number increase and decrease?
increase is oxidation
decrease is reduction
How do you balance half equations?
balancing the number of electrons lost and gained
putting the two half equations together
What’s a reducing and oxidising agent?
reducing- loses electrons and gets oxidised
oxidising- gains electrons and gets reduced
What’s a displacement reaction?
is a reaction where one atom replaces another in a chemical reaction
Oxidation number rules:
elements by itself: 0
group 1a: +1
group 2a: +2
halogens(7a): -1, positive w oxygen
monatomic ion: ion charge
H: +1 w non metals, -1 w metals
O: -2 except peroxide(H2O2)
F: always -1
sum of neutral compound: 0
sum of polyatomic ion: ion charge
