Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What are 2 ways in which you can follow the course of reaction?
continuous methods- measuring volume of gas given off, colorimetry, changes in electrical conductivity
sampling methods
What is the rate constant?
the proportionality constant
What is the rate of reaction?
is related to concentration of reactants by the rate of reaction
What is definition of a half life?
is the time taken for the concentration of a reactant to halve
What is the activation energy?
is the minimum energy that colliding particles must have in order to react
What is the effect of concentration, pressure and surface on rate of reaction?
temperature- particles gain more energy, move faster, collide more frequently/w more energy
pressure- more particles per unit of volume, collisions more frequent, increases the use of the reaction
surface- increases the use of the reaction, frequency of collisions would higher, high surface area
catalyst- speed up the rate reaction by providing a different reaction path with lower activation energy
enzymes- are proteins which catalyse specific reactions
