Redox Flashcards
What are transferred in a REDOX reaction?
Electrons.
Loss of electrons is:
Oxidisation
Gain of electrons is:
Reduction
In a redox reaction what happens simultaneously?
Reduction and Oxidisation
What does an Oxidising agent do?
Accepts electrons, gets reduced.
What does a Reducing agent do?
Donates electrons, gets oxidised.
What happens to the Oxidisation Number when an electron is lost?
It increases (oxidised).
What happens to the Oxidisation Number when an electron is gained?
It decreases (reduced).
How do you know if an element has been oxidised or reduced from a chemical equation?
Assign an Oxidisation Number before and after for each element.
If it goes up, its been oxidised. If it goes down, its been reduced.
What do metals generally do when forming compounds?
Metals generally donate electrons. (Negative oxidation numbers).
What do Non-Metals generally do when forming compounds?
Non metals generally gain electrons. (Positive oxidation numbers).
