Ions & the Periodic Table Flashcards
Atoms in Group 1-3:
Loose electrons, and form the configuration of the previous noble gas.
Atoms in Group 5-7:
Gain electrons, and from the electronic configuration of next noble gas.
Why do the following Atoms not generally form ions? Be, C, B & Si
Too much energy is required to transfer the outer electron.
What are Molecular Ions?
Molecular ions is where a group of covalently bonded atoms loose or gain electrons to form an ion.
What is an Ammonium Ion?
NH₄⁺
What is a Hydroxide Ion?
OH⁻
What is a Nitrate Ion?
NO₃⁻
What is a Carbonate Ion?
CO₃²⁻
What is a Sulphate Ion?
SO₄²⁻
What charge does an Ionic Compound have?
Zero
What do Oxidation Numbers show?
Show how many electrons are transferred.
What is a Zinc Ion?
Zn²⁺
What is a Silver Ion?
Ag⁺
