Halogens Flashcards
What type of molecules are Halogens?
Diatomic (two atoms joined by single covalent bond).
What happens to the boiling & melting point going down the group and why?
The boiling & melting point increase due to increasing strength of London forces (Dipole - Dipole).
This is because of the increasing size and relative mass of the atoms.
What is a Halide?
A negative halogen ion.
A volatile substance has a________
Low melting point.
What happens to Volatility going down the group?
Volatility decreases (shown by the trends in physical state).
What charge does a Halogen ion have when it reacts?
It gains an electron, so forms a 1- ion.
Why are Halogens called Oxidising agents?
In a reaction, they are reduced and therefore oxidise another substance (redox).
Why do Halogens become less reactive going down the group?
Down the group, Atomic radius increases and outer electrons are further away from the nucleus.
Also due to more inner electrons, outer electrons become more shielded.
These factors make it harder for the atoms to attract the electron they need to form an ion and as such, larger atoms are less reactive.
What is another term for less reacting for halogens?
Less oxidising.
What do halogens displace in reactions?
Less reactive Halide ions.
