REDOX Flashcards
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the loss of electrons
What is reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons
What is a REDOX reaction?
REDOX reaction is when both oxidation and reduction occur
What are 3 strong oxidising agents?
Permanganate, Dichromate and Hydrogen peroxide
What is a reducing agent?
The reactant which donates electrons and is oxidised
What is an oxidising agent?
The reactant which accepts electrons and is reduced
What compounds tend to act as the best oxidising agents?
1.Non-metals
2. Halogens
3. Elements with high electronegativities
What compounds tend to act as the best reducing agents?
- Metals
- Alkali metals
- Elements with low electronegativities
What is 1 strong reducing agent
Carbon Monoxide gas
Where on the electrochemical series are the best oxidising agents found?
Bottom of the left-hand column
Where on the electrochemical series are the best reducing agents found?
Top of the right-hand column
Why are oxidising agents widely used?
Because they can kill fungi, bacteria and can be used for bleaching clothes
What are the steps to writing and balancing REDOX equations?
- Check that the main element is balanced
- Add water to balance the oxygen atom
- Add H+ ions to balance any hydrogen atoms
- Add electrons to the same side as the H+ so both sides have the same overall charge
