16
Q

What are the effects of additional OH groups on alcohols?

A
  1. Hydrogen bonding increases
  2. Melting/boiling points increases
  3. Solubility in water increases
  4. Viscosity increases
17
Q

What is viscosity?

A

The thickness of a liquid

Liquids like golden syrup are described as viscous

18
Q

What is the first way which you can test viscosity?

A
  1. Time how long it takes a marble to sink to the bottom of a test tube containing the liquid. The liquid that takes the longest is the most viscous
19
Q

What is the second way which you can test viscosity?

A
  1. Fill a tube nearly to the top with each liquid and seal both ends so a small air bubble is left. Invert the tube and time how long it takes for the air bubble to travel form one side to the other
20
Q

What is the third way which you can test viscosity?

A
  1. Time how long it takes a particular volume of liquid to pass through a burette. The liquid that takes the longest to pass through the burette to the conical flask is the most viscous
21
Q

What functional group do carboxylic acids contain?

A

The carboxyl functional group
(-COOH)

22
Q

What is the general formula for carboxylic acids?

A

Cn H2n+1 COOH

23
Q

Metal Oxide + Acid =

A

Salt + Water

24
Q

Metal Carbonate + Acid =

A

Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide

25
Q

Metal Hydroxide + Acid =

A

Salt + Water

26
Q

Metal + Acid =

A

Salt + Hydrogen

27
Q

What salt is produced when Sodium Hydroxide and Ethanoic Acid are reacted together?

A

Sodium Ethanoate
