Oxidation of Alcohols Flashcards
What does oxidation do to the oxygen to hydrogen ratio?
It increases it
What does reduction do to the oxygen to hydrogen ratio?
It reduces it
Which alcohols can be oxidised?
Primary alcohols and secondary alcohols
Tertiary alcohols can’t because the C-OH has no H attached to it
What does oxidising a primary alcohol form?
An aldehyde
What does oxidising a secondary alcohol form?
A ketone
What functional group do aldehydes and ketones contain?
O
II
-C-
(carbonyl)
Where is the carbonyl group in aldehydes?
Always on the first carbon with 1 hydrogen attached
Where is the carbonyl group in ketones?
Never on the end of the carbon chain
What is the general formula for aldehydes and ketones?
CnH2nO
This makes them isomers
What colour changes occur when oxidising aldehydes using reagents?
Acidified potassium dichromate - orange to green
Tollens’ reagent - colourless
Benedict’s/ Fehling’s Reagent - blue to red
When oxidising an aldehyde, what is formed?
A carboxylic acid
What is the process of oxidising an alkene into a carboxylic acid?
Alkene - Alcohol - Primary - Aldehyde - Carboxylic acid
What are many flavour and aroma molecules?
Aldehydes
What does a peptide link look like?
O H
II I
-C - N-
