Chemistry in Society Flashcards
What are industrial processes designed to do?
Maximise profit and minimise the impact on the environment
What are raw materials?
Basic recourses that the Earth supplies us with
What is a feedstock?
A chemical from which other chemicals are manufactured from. These are made from raw materials
What are the factors which influence the industrial process?
- Availability, sustainability and cost of feedstock
- Recycling opportunities
- Energy requirements
- Yield of products (how much product is produced)
What are the environmental considerations to the industrial process?
- Minimising waste
- Avoiding the use or production of toxic substances
- Designing products which will biodegrade if appropriate
What is molar volume?
The volume of 1 mol of gas, it is measured in L mol^-1
What is the molar volume triangle?
n / MV
What is the ‘Actual Yield’?
The quantity of the desired products formed
What is the ‘Theoretical Yield’?
The quantity of the desired product that should be obtained
What is Atom Economy a measure of?
The percentage of reactants that become useful products
How do we know if the atom economy is inefficient?
If it has a low percentage and/ or uses coal
