recycling Flashcards
where is carbon found?
in living organisms
why does carbon need to be recycled?
so it can become availble again to other living organisms
what passes down a food web?
carbon compounds
how is carbon dioxide release?
bacteria or fungi decomposing
how can the carbon in limestone return back to the air?
as carbon dioxide in volcanic eruptions or weathering
what do plants take in?
nitrogen as nitrates from the soil for growth
what does feeding do?
pass nitrogen compounds along a food chain
what do decomposers such as fungi do?
they convert proteins and urea into ammonia
what do nitrifying bacteria do?
convert ammonia to nitrates
what do denitrifying bacteria do?
convert nitrates to nitrogen gas
what do nitrogen-fixing bacteria do?
fix nitrogen gas in root nodules, this also happens in lightening
