Q

explain what a fish does to its food

A

the fish eat it and digest it. They use the digested food molecules to build up new chemicals for growth

Q

why does recycling of nutrients take longer in acidic or waterlogged soils than in well drained soils?

A

because the lack of oxygen hinders microbial respiration

14
Q

how does limestone release carbon dioxide?

A

it is attacked by rain which is often acidic. Carbon dioxide reacts with the rain to form carbonic acid. The acid weathers the rock and carbon dioxide if released

erupting volcanoes and forest firess

17
Q

what is nitrogen another example of?

A

an element that is recycled naturally

18
Q

why is nitrogen hard for plants and animals to use?

A

because it is very uncreative and does not combine easily with other elements

19
Q

what can nitrogen in dead animals and plants be recycled as?

A

decomposers

20
Q

what are fungi and bacteria in the soil? and what do they do?

A

decomposers. They decay dead animals and plants

21
Q

what does this release and what can these be used by?

A

it releases nitrogen and other elements. These elements can be used by living organisms

22
Q

what do plants and animals need nitrogen for?

A

to make proteins for growth and for making enzymes that control the reactions necessary for life.

23
Q

what do decomposers do in the nitrogen cycle?

A

break down proteins in dead bodies and urea in liquid animal waste, releasing ammonia

24
Q

why do babies napies smell of ammonia? and what can this cause?

A

because bacteria convert the urea in urine into ammonia. This can cause nappy rash because ammonia is a strong alkali

25
Q

what does nitrifying bacteria do?

A

converts ammonia into nitrates

26
Q

what does nitrogen fixing bacteria do?

A

they fix nitrogen gas and convert it into ammonia or nitrates and then into amino acids to form proteins

27
Q

what does some bacteria do? and what are these bacteria called?

A

breaks down nitrates in the soil and release nitrogen back into our atmosphere. These are called denitrifying bacteria

28
Q

how does lightening fix nitrogen gas?

A

during a thunder storm, energy form the lightening is used to combine nitrogen and oxygen to form nitrogen oxides. These oxides dissolve in the rain and from nitrates in the soil.

29
Q

how do insectivorous obtain their nitrogen?

A

digest their bodies and absorb the nitrates.
