classification Flashcards
what are the 7 groups called?
kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
what does it mean when you move further down to species?
there are fewer organisms but share more siilarities
how can organisms be calssified?
by an artificial and natural system
how does the artificial system work?
it is based on one or two characteristics that make identification easier, for example birds live by the sea so are called sea birds
how does a natural system work?
its based on evolutionary relationships and is more detailed. Animals that are more closely related are likely to be in the same groups
what is a species?
a group of organisms capable of reproducing fertile offspring
how does the binomial system work?
there are 2 parts to the name, the first being the genus and the second being the species
the genus part starts with a capital letter the species starts with a lower case letter
what is an archaeopteryx?
an example of an animal that would be put into 2 groups
what are its characteristics?
has teeth and a long bony tail like a reptile
it has wings
why cant bacteria be calssified?
because they do not interbreed, they reproduce asexually
why cant mules be classafied as a species?
because they are a mixture of a donkey and a horse, so they are infertile
what type of organisms will compete more?
organisms that share the same niche or are in the smae species
