Q

Within 10nm of Valley you request a Radar to Initial descent to penetrate through cloud. Valley ATC descend you iaw the Final Approach Vectoring Altitude (FAVA) as per the Surveillance Minimum Approach Chart (SMAC).

However, you are still not visual, but the cloud base is reported to only be a couple of hundred feet below you, what action can you take?

A

You can “request further descent”.

ATC will downgrade you to a Traffic Service and descend you no lower than 500ft below the SMAC.

Under such circumstances, aircrew are responsible for their own terrain clearance.
