Circuit Procedures Flashcards
Approx. what distance from initial should Valley Tower (#2) be contacted?
3 nm
Which has priority - joining instrument traffic or joining visual traffic?
Instrument traffic
There is a potential for conflict at Initial if Valley rwy 31 and Mona rwy 04 are in use. How, weather permitting, should joining traffic behave to minimise risk?
Traffic joining Valley = Fly through initial at 1000ft Valley QFE
Traffic joining Mona = Fly through initial at or above 2000ft Mona QFE
If Mona weather prevents this being carried out in VMC, inform ATC who will sequence traffic. If not possible, ATC will instruct traffic inbound for Mona 04 to join downwind from the NE.
What is the minimum break height for 4FTS aircraft, excluding rwy 31?
500ft QFE
What is the minimum break height on rwy 31?
800ft QFE
How should aircraft overtake in the cct?
Laterally iaw RA2307, and on the side opposite to the circuit direction (i.e. on the outside).
What type of join should you fly if a Hawk T2 is conducting a visual join behind you?
VRIAB at no less than 240 KIAS
Visual straight in if Texan pilot is not qualified to fly a VRIAB
What is the max g to be pulled on a VRIAB?
4g
What is the maximum number of aircraft or speaking units in the visual circuit?
3, with one extra permitted providing it is joining to land or departing
What is the maximum number of other aircraft that can be in the circuit for solo students to fly a VRIAB?
2 - Should identify both visually prior to break
Break should be started no earlier than 1/3 of the way down the runway
To what height should aircraft climb before commencing their turn in to the circuit?
At least 500ft
What are the minimum weather requirements for visual circuits?
5000m vis, 1000ft main cloud base
When are SIAs not permitted to Mona rwy 04?
When Valley are on rwy 31
When should contact with tower be made when conducting a SIA?
At least one minute before being 5 nm on the centreline (i.e. at 180kts, approx. 8nm)
When on a SIA, what call should be made when at 5 nm on the centreline?
“Long Final” with intentions
When conducting a SIA, where should the “Final, Gear Down” call be made?
2 nm (approx. 600ft) - At this point Tower should issue your clearance
Does SIA traffic have priority over normal circuit traffic and departures?
Yes
If a PFL is not planned to touch and go, by what height should a Texan initiate a high approach?
300ft
When can a Texan land behind a Hawk that intends to stream a chute?
Once the Hawk has vacated the rwy and the chute has been recovered or jettisoned clear of the rwy
What side of the rwy should you move to after landing?
Your ‘company’ side
What does it mean if a Juno/Jupiter has its anti-collision lighted set to WHITE?
It will be imminently lifting off, do not proceed past it unless cleared by ATC.
If a gust factor 5 or 10 (relating to the potential effect on IAS due to gusts) is imposed, what does it mean for Texan pilots?
Fly the approach using T/O flap (+5 KIAS, i.e. 105 KIAS) and increase threshold speed by 50% of the gust.
When operating on rwy 19, what should you keep an eye out for during the approach?
Trains in the undershoot - if it looks like near or direct overflight will occur, then a go around should be initiated. ATC should also provide a warning.
To what height will ATC direct circuit traffic to climb if an aircraft is carrying out a PEFATO?
2000ft QFE (or laterally well clear). You must avoid PEFATO aircraft, they have priority.
8nm and 3nm for instrument traffic are equivalent to what points in the visual circuit?
8nm - Downwind
3nm - Final
What height should normal circuit traffic remain at (going around) for aircraft departing and arriving to another runway during dual runway ops?
Departing - 1000ft QFE
Recovering - 1500ft QFE (the aircraft recovering to the dual runway will be breaking at 1000ft QFE)
