What should be included in the initial ‘request start’ call to ATC?
Callsign, No. of aircraft and POB, location, ATIS code
“Valley Ground, (C/S), 2 POB, SeaHawk, Request Start with Delta”
What must you suffix your callsign with for the taxy and takeoff calls during your first solo on type?
“First Solo”
What is a “Words” call and on what frequency can it be made?
A call for “words” should be made on the ‘company’ freq. just prior to taxy.
Can be used to discuss delayed take-off timings, speaking with the DA for any additional info subsequent to the out-brief (e.g. updated CADS picture, confirmation of amended low-level/VATA bookings, etc.
If the airspace you intend to use has changed to that put in the warn-out, when should you pass this new information to ATC?
In the ‘request taxy’ call.
“Valley Ground, C/S, request taxy for VATA DEF 0930-1015Z in the block 10-25k”.
How many VFR low level departures are available at Valley?
Two, LL South and LL East/North
How are the majority of departures from RAF Valley flown?
IFR as a non-standard instrument departure or MID.
Note that all departures, including the two LL VFR departures, should maintain rwy track until a minimum of 500ft QFE prior to turning.
Exception - MIDs with additional DME restrictions
What service is available to crews on the LL VFR departures?
Basic Service
Describe the LL South departure (incl. difference for rwy 01)
Cross the coast at 1000ft, then descend and remain at or below 500ft QFE until Radar has reported “no instrument or recovering traffic to affect”
If ATC reports that there is instrument traffic, then aircraft should not climb above 1000ft until positively clear.
For rwy 01, aircraft should depart downwind and remain clear of the approach lane.
Describe the LL East/North departure
Routing detailed in the FOB, but rule of thumb is to turn and fly around the Mona. Rwys 31 and 01 = R turn around N of Mona MATZ, then heading East to area just N of Beaumaris.
Rwys 13 and 19 = Turn L around Mona MATZ, fly up Anglesey E coast to then turn E over the sea once N of Bangor (Beaumaris area).
Note - A transit through the Mona MATZ is permitted if the zone is clear of traffic.
When not departing LL, what service should you request on initial contact with Radar?
Traffic service or Deconfliction service
How can you improve deconfliction when departing RAF Valley for the VATAs?
Use the transit corridor
What medium level departures are available from RAF Valley?
East MID
South MID
Non-standard instrument departure
When flying the East MID departure from rwy 31, what FL should you plan for the initial climb to not be below in order to deconflict with SI(PFL) traffic at Mona?
FL90
What must you do if you intend to depart in to the instrument pattern?
Pre-note ATC at the earliest opportunity.
Until above what height should you maintain runway track prior to turning if you request a deconfliction service from the departure controller?
1400ft QFE (due to the SMAC)
