Reconstruction Flashcards
What was Lincoln’s idea for the Reconstruction?
Forgiveness to everyone except the Confederate leaders.
What was the 10 percent plan?
States take an oath to reorganize themselves without allowing slavery and once 10% of the people pledge to it, the state will be readmitted.
Why was Lincoln’s plan controversial?
Congressmen believed it was Congress’s right to readmit states into the Union, not the President’s. Some supported Lincoln, while some wanted the states to go through the entire process of admission (which was 10 times harder).
What was the Wade-Davis Bill?
Required majority of while males to pledge to the Union. Bill was “pocket-vetoed” by Lincoln.
Who did Johnson hate the most from the South?
The rich planters.
What was Johnson’s idea of Reconstruction?
Same as Lincoln, except the rich planters had to apply for presidential pardons. No address to the freedmen.
Congressional Reconstruction consisted of what?
Lenient toward the South; the south went back to its old ways.
What did the South do to regain control?
Passed the Black Codes, which gave them only a few rights and kept them dependent on the White Southerners.
What was the Ku Klux Klan?
Discriminated against the Blacks and tortured them.
Radical Republicans?
- Harsher plan.
- Slow admission process
- Give all rights to the freedmen and have a good southern society
What bills did the moderate republicans propose?
Freedmen’s Bureau and Civil Rights Act of 1866. Both were vetoed by Johnson.
What did the Civil Rights Act of 1866 say?
African American citizenship and all other rights.
Thirteenth Amendment:
Freed slaves
Fourteenth Amendment:
grant citizenship to everyone born in the US and equal protection of the law
Congressional Election of 1866?
Full republican control
