recognising objects Flashcards
what is object agnosia?
failure torecognise objects, no loss of intelligence, just cannot recognise objects
what is Marr’s model of recognition?
analyse an image with a range of edge filters- use gestalts grouping
what does Marrs model predict?
visibility principle axis is important, different orientations equally easy to recognise
what is a problem with marss model?
many obects hard to recognise if upside down or rotated
what is Biderman ‘recognition by components’?
detect arrangement of edges by segmenting objects into parts
what are the two components of detecting arrangement of edges?
parallel, co-linear and co-terminating
such arrangemetns do not alter with view
what are the two geon types?
axis straight / curved and cross section type (symmetric, smooth or angular)
describe recognition by components?
need only a few geons to describe most objects, a few components support recognition
what are problems with recognition by components?
doesnt differentiate objects within class and does not use surface pattern
what is the processing of form system?
V1 to V2 to V4 to temporal cortex
how is object identity coded?
by large arrays of cells
what is lesion of temporal cortex?
disrupts pattern discrimination and object recognition
