emotion; the brain and theory Flashcards
what was Schachter and Singers attribution to emotion?
if you know the source of the feedback, you attribute the emotion to that source
what did Dutton and Aron investigate ?
how to get someone to like you
bridge experiment, give them ur number and are they more likely to phone in a ‘scary’ situation?
what did patient SM have?
urbach wiethe disease
what is urbach-weithe disease?
build up of calcium deposits in the amygdala
how are scary sitautions percieved without amygdala?
not scary
explain amygdala and social interaction?
without amygdala no idea of personal space
SM patient and fear expression?
recognizes most facial expressions but finds fear hard to recognize unless instructed to pay attention to the eyes
what is the insula cortex?
primary cortex for internal sense and material me
temperature, nheartbeat and distended stomach
what is associated with disgust?
insula cortex
what are two areas that process their own different emotions?
feedback from the vsicera passes to insula cortex (autonomic response)
mixes wiht the ‘high road’ cortical sensory sognals in anterior cingulate cortex
what is Universality Thesus (Darwin)?
ekmans testing of expression generation; got natives of Papua new guinea to do facial expressiona
what are basic emotions?
fear, surprise, anger, happy, sad
what are higher emotions?
disbelief, embarassment , guilt ; are not universal and so harder to study
how can we classify facial expressions?
in activation units (AU)
what are activation units?
defined by groups of muscles involved in creating facial expressions
what is Duchenne smile?
used electrical shocks to generate facial expressions by probinf specific muscles
what did Duchenne smile experiment find?
we have two smiles
what are the two types of smile?
social/voluntary smile
spontaneous smile
what are micro expressions?
spontaneous facial expressions
what are socio-evolutionary models of emotion?
evolved not from basic adaptive behaviours but from early hominids as social grouping became dominant
what are social constructionist models of models?
emotions are a social construct and should be thought of tin this way
what is Plutchicks model of emotions?
emotions evolved from basic adaptive behaviours
