Classical Conditioning? Flashcards
define classical conditioning?
familiarity breeds habituation
what is habituation?
the decline in tendancy to respond to stimulus once it has become familiar
what was Ivan Pavlovs most famous experiment?
conditioning a dog to salivate to sound of a bell
what happened to dog before conditioning?
UCS(unconditioned stimulus) automatically produces UCR , neutral stimulus does not produced salivation
what happened to dog during conditioning?
UCS paired with neutral stimulus, UCS produced UCR (unconditioned response)
what happened to dog after conditioning?
neutral stimulus is now conditioned stimulus, it produces CR = slaivation which is similar to the UCR produced by hot dog
what did Pavlov propose distinctions between?
unconditioned reflex (salivation when food was in dogs mouth, born /innate reflex) and conditioned reflex (salivation to sound of bell, these reflexes were aquired through learning)
what is extinction conditioning?
undoing of classical conditioning
how does the extinction method work?
repeated trials where CS is presented alone
what is generalisation in classical conditioning?
the more similar the test stimuli to the CS , the more similar the CR
what is discrimination in classical conditioning?
the more similar the test stimuli, the longer to learn discrimination
two examples of widespread classical conditioning?
found in many animals, our eating patterns and drug abuse
conditioning and phobias?
could be a conditioned emotional repsonse
