Neuroscience Intro Flashcards
are psychological processes based on material substrate?
the processes can be considered in the abstract but the implementation occurs on/in a physical substrate
are psychological processes independant of material substrate?
the processes have nothing to with the brain, but the brain mechanisms inform process limitations
what is dualism?
mind and brain are fundamentally differnet, trace back to Plato
what is a problem for dualism?
how can physical events interact with influence of the non physical?
what is monoism?
claim is that operations of the brain lead to mental events
what are the counter evidence for monoism?
near death experiences, ghost sightings, out of body experience
what are the three meninges which cover the CNS?
dura mater , arachnoid membrane and pia mater
what are the two meninges which cover the PNS?
dura mater and pia mater
how do meninges allow CNS to interact with environment?
has two loops, each containing efferetn adn afferent sections
what are the three components of the forebrain?
cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and limbic system
what are the 5 sub sections of the basal ganglia?
sub-cortical nuclei just lateral to thalamus, caudate nucleus, putamen, striatum, globus pllidus
what does the sub cortical nuclei do?
involved in control of movement
what does the caudate nucleus do?
urge to do things, related to rewards system
what is the striatum ?
caudate and putamen
what is the putamen?
learned automatic movements i.e. driving
what is the globus pallidus?
control of voluntary movement
what are the three sub sections of the limbic system?
cingulate cortex, amygdala and hippocampus
what is the cingulate cortex?
error signals , attention and emotion
what is the amygdala?
emotion, moslty fear
what is the hippocampus?
formation of recall of memories / navigation
what are the three sub sections of the telencephalon system in the forebrain?
basal ganglia, cerebral cortex and limbic system
what are the two sub sections of the diencephalon system in the forebrain?
thalamus and hypothalamus
what does the thalamus do?
controls input to cerebral cortex
what does the hypothalamus do?
controls autonomic nervous system
what is the main section of the mid brain?
mesencephalon
what are the two sub sections of the hind brain?
metencephalon and myelencephalon
what are the two sub sections of the metencephalon?
pons and cerrebelum
what is the cerrebelum?
little brain , sensory information, modulated motor commands= precise movement , sensitive to alcohol
what are pons?
bridge between cerebellum and cortex, role in sleep/arousal , facial muscles and tongue
what is the sub section of the myelencephalon?
medulla oblongata
what does the medulla iblongata do?
role in automatic nervous contro of cardio vascular system, swallowing etc
