Neuroscience Intro 2 Flashcards
what is the cerebral cortex?
disporoportionally large in humans
what are the 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex?
occipital, paritiel , temporal and frontal
two points about hemisphere specialisation?
cerberal hemispheres look almost the same, but hemispheres are better are different tasks
what are 4 ways of testing for hemispheric specialisation?
hemishpered connected by commissures, sometimes cut the commisures for epilepsy, split brain patients, reaction time experiments
how do reaction time experiments work for hemisphere specialistion?
use subjects with intact brain, present stimuli to left or right visual field, record reaction time
what do what do reaction time experiments for hemisphere specialisation suggest?
left hemisphere= language , speech and local image
feature extraction
right hemisphere = visio-spatial awareness, global imaging processing, face processing
what are the three main cortices?
primary, secondary/association and frontal
what is the primary cortex?
first cortical station for sensory input, last cortical station for outpu
what is the secondary cortex?
cortical areas receiving input from primary sensory areas , are adjacent to primary areas= short connective distance
what is the frontal cortex?
motor areas, perform executive function
what are the 4 cortices within the frontal cortex?
dorsolateral prefrontal, anterior cingulate, orbito-frontal and ventromedial prefrontal
how do the 4 sub-frontal cortices react with depression?
dosolateral is underative, anterioir cingulate is overctive, orbito-frontal is overactive nad ventromedial is overactive
what is the major cortical pathway of brain?
auditory, olfactory, visual, motorand somatosnesory
