Recession And Furcation Flashcards
Describe the term recession
Apical retreat of the periodontium when ID papilla remains at normal level
Tooth are not lost due to true recession
What occurs during shrinkage
Apical retreat of periodontal tissues along with apical retreat on ID papilla
What are causes of recessions?
Fenestration- window in bone- usually Buccally
Dehiscence- lack of bone- commonly where tooth is proclined
Chronic minor trauma- poor tooth brushing technique
Fraenum pulls
Ortho tx
Excessive scaling
Parafunction
How is recession seen clinically?
Still mans cleft- v shape in gum
Mccalls festoon- rolled gum margins
What can be associated with recession?
Dentine hypersensitivity
Root caries
Tooth brush abrasion
Where is localised recession often seen and what are causes?
Lower anteriors
Due to fraenum pull or thin Buccal bone covering
How should recession be monitored?
Double periodontal charting
Clinical photographs
Study models
What is appropriate treatment of recession
Eliminate casual factors eg. Modify to technique, replace faulty margins, frenectomy
Treat hypersensitivity- fluoride, desensitising agents
Prevent. Caries- good oh, fluoride
Perio surgery- gingival grafts, repair fenestration defects
What is a furcation
Horizontal loss of support in areas of multi rooted teeth convergence
How is severity of furcation recorded
Grade1 - horizontal support lost less than one third of width
Grade2- over two thirds of width
Grade 3- through- through defect
What does furcation involve to reduce a tooths prognosis
Impedes effective cleaning
Allows Ingress of bacteria through accessory canals affecting health of pulp
Treatment of recession
Root resection
Furcationplasty
