Q
explain why the scots volunteered to fight
A
- Poverty - Many men saw fighting in the war as a way of escaping poverty
- Propaganda - this made the war seem fun and exciting. This appealed to men so many volunteered as they thought it would be exhilarating
- Duration of the war- many believed the war would be very short so did not mind having to fight if it was only for a few months. There was a saying that the war would be “over by Christmas”
- A way of traveling - Many men saw fighting in the war as a way of exploring the world as most had never left Britain before
- Public Perception - things such as the white feather campaign, where women would hand men a white feather if they were not fighting in the war, made men feel pressure to sign up as they did not want to stay behind and be perceived as a coward by the public
- Tradition - for many Scots their father and grandfather had been soldiers
