Why was rationing introduced

A
  1. Soldiers took priority therefore there was less food on the Home Front
  2. Health was being affected by lack of food/malnutrition
  3. Some people were starving
  4. Farm production was affected by recruitment of labourers
  5. U-boats sank many supply ships which reduced the amount of food available
  6. Vital war workers needed to be fed adequately to produce weapons

  1. Farmers were paid extra to grow wheat and potatoes
  2. Allotments started in towns
  3. People urged to dig up lawns and grow veg
  4. Women’s land army started to grow more food
  5. Substitute food- margarine instead of butter
