Why was propaganda needed
A
- To help men enlist in the army by making it look exciting
- Make Brits angry towards the Germans and create a fighting spirit
- Encourage women to take on new working roles
- Germans had their own propaganda campaigns so the British needed them too
- Encourage people to work together
- Encourage family members to persuade men to enlist

Was propaganda effective
A
- Many Germans living in Britain were arrested & imprisoned until the end of the war
- Thousands of men enlisted at the beginning of the war, some of this was due to propaganda
- Dachshund dogs were beaten up in the street, people refused to sing German Christmas carols & refused to attend concerts featuring the music of German composers.
- The royal family, aware of the anti-German sentiment, changed its name from Saxe-Coburg Gotha to the House of Windsor.
- Propaganda was used to create a very anti-German feeling within Britain and Scotland.
- Portray a sense of duty/guilt
