Q

How does Sherif support realistic conflict theory (superordinate goals)?

A

Boys were brought together in order to solve a common goal this
reduced conflict and prejudice

e.g. the water tank broke and both groups of boys had to fix it

Q

Why is social identity theory a better explanation than realistic conflict theory using the results from Sherif?

Q

Why is realistic conflict theory deterministic?

A

It doesn’t explain how personality types and free will may affect prejudice for example there is evidence so it is deterministic

Those with authoritarian personality are more
susceptible to group identity over self-identity (according to Adorno)

Q

How is realistic conflict theory useful for society?

A

Not only explains what causes prejudice but also how to solve it

Suggests that in cities that have issues with football hooliganism, charity matches and testimonials with
both clubs would solve conflict
