Real Numbers Flashcards
What are real numbers?
The set of all rational and irrational numbers. This includes integers, fractions, and decimals.
What does it mean for a number to be “less than” another number?
It is to the left of the other number on the number line.
0 is less than 1 because it is to the left of 1.
What does it mean for a number to be “greater than” another number?
It is to the right of the other number on the number line.
0 is greater than -1 because it is to the right.
What does it mean for a number to be “less than or equal to” a number?
That number is to the left of or corresponds to that other number.
What does it mean for a number to be “greater than or equal to” a number?
That number is to the right of or corresponds to that other number.
What is an interval?
The set of all real numbers between two numbers.
What is an absolute value?
The distance of a number from 0 on the number line.
What is the triangle inequality?
|r+s| is less than or equal to |r|+|s|
What is a number line?
A line with negative numbers to the left of 0 and positive numbers to the right of 0.
Every point on the number line is represented by a real number and vice versa.
What is the distributive rule in mathematics?
X(y+z) = xy+ xz
What is the zero product property?
Any number multiplied by 0 is 0
What is the Commutative property?
x+y = y+x and zy=yz
What is the associative property?
(x+y)+z =x+(y+z) and x(yz) = (xy)z
What is the identity property?
p*1= p and p+0=p
What are the negation rules?
Multiplying a negative times a negative is a positive and multiplying a negative times a positive is a negative
