Graphs Of Functions Flashcards
Piecewise-defined function
A function that is split into “pieces” at certain values (e.g. Y=2 when x is less than 1 and y= 2x when x is greater than or equal to 1).
Reflection
A reflection is when a function is flipped over a line or point.
Stretched vertically
A function is stretched vertically when it is multiplied by a number greater than 1
Shrunk vertically
A function is shrunk vertically when it is multiplied by a number between 0 and 1.
Shifted upward
A function is shifted vertically when a number is added to the end of the function.
Shifted downward
An equation is shifted downward when a number is subtracted from the end of the equation.
Shifted to the left
A function is shifted to the left when (x+a number) is substituted for x
Shifted to the right
An equation is shifted to the right when (x-a number) is substituted for x.
