Coordinate Geometry Flashcards
Rectangular coordinate system
Two perpendicular lines used to plot points, lines, and curves.
xy-coordinate system
Another name for the rectangular coordinate system.
xy-plane
Another name for the rectangular coordinate system.
x-axis
The horizontal line in the rectangular coordinate system.
y-axis
The vertical line in the rectangular coordinate system.
Origin
The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect, corresponding to (0, 0)
Quadrants
The four sections of the rectangular coordinate system.
X-coordinate
The first coordinate after the the parentheses in an ordered pair. Tells how far right or left the point will be on the graph.
Y-coordinate
The second coordinate after the the parentheses in an ordered pair. Tells how far up or down the point will be on the graph.
Graph of an equation
The lines or curve that plots the valid solutions for an equation.
Slope
The “rise over run,” of distance moved vertical for the distance moved horizontal.
X-intercept
A point where a line or curve intersects the x-axis. Can be found by setting y equal to 0.
Y-intercept
A point on a graph where a line or curve interests the y-axis. Can be found by setting x equal to 0.
Parallel
When two lines have the same slope.
Perpendicular
When two lines have negative reciprocal slopes.
