Reading Exercise p. 89 Flashcards
p. 89.1 mē pater meus, rēx deōrum, officium magnum perficere iubet. quandō patrem meum cūrō, omnia faciam ut iubet.
My father, the king of the gods, orders me to perform a great service. Since I take care of my father, I will do everything [literally “all things”] as he orders.
p. 89.2 dum enim hic Alcumēnam, Amphitruōnis mulierem, dēcipit, ego hunc seruum illīus domum intrāre nōn sinam.
For while he [literally “this one”] is deceiving Alcumena, Amphitruo’s wife, I myself will not permit the slave of that (man) to enter the house.
p. 89.3 meā enim audāciā seruum stultum īrātum faciam, et fōrmā meā dēcipiam. nam mihi homo ille nūllā sapientiā uidētur esse.
For with [by means of] my audacity I will make the stupid slave angry, and with [by means of] my appearance I will deceive (him). For that (one) seems to me to be a person of no wisdom.
p. 89.4 mē igitur similem fōrmae illīus faciam, et illum domum adgredī nōn sinam.
Therefore I will make myself similar in [“of”] his form [or: “of that form”], and I will not permit him to approach the home. [note that it can’t be “approach that home” because domus is feminine, 4th declension]
p. 89.5 Sōsia haud mihi crēdet, quandō illī dīcam ‘plānē nōn tū Sōsia es, sed ego!’ īrātus erit homo ille stultus et ‘mentīris’ dīcet.
Sosia will believe me, when I will say to him “clearly you are not Sosia, but I (am)! That stupid man will be angry and he will say “you lie.”
p. 89.6 ‘fōrma tua similis meī est, ut arbitror, at ego Sōsia sum, nōn tū. abī, homo sceleste!’
“Your appearance is like me [of me], as I think, but I am Sosia, not you. Go away, wicked man!”
p. 89.7 ego tamen ‘quam nescius est hic seruus, sī mē scelestum arbitrātur. nam sī ego scelestus sum, Sōsia ille scelestus est—nam ego Sōsia, at tū homo nihilī!’
I however (will say) “how this slave is ignorant, if he thinks (that) I (am) wicked. For if I am wicked, that Sosia is wicked—for I (am) Sosia, but you (are) a man (worth) nothing!”
