How to identify the main idea:
See if the idea is mentioned in more paragraphs than not. First, middle, and end (intro & conclusion). Visualize and summarize the readings.
What words indicate that a detail is being provided about the main idea?
One, next, another, first, and finally
—- referst to the information provided by the author in the words or sentences surrounding an unknown word or words.
Context clue
What context clue words can signal that an antonym is being used?
although, but, and instead

Try using the meaning chosen in the sentence to see if it makes sense.
—- refers to the emotions or feelings that the reader attaches to words.
Connotation
—- refers to the attitude or feelings the author has about the topic.
Tone
Connotations that can hint to bias or objective writings:
Positive or negative connotations. EX: positive: “inspired”, visionary” VS negative: “wasteful” “foolhardy”
—- a set of beliefs that the writer has about the subject.
Assumptions
—- is something that can be proved (right or wrong).
Fact
—- is ideas or concepts that cannot be measured.
Opinions
Opinion words and statement hints in determining fact from opinion:
-Probabilities or speculations about the future
-love, hate, envy
-better, best, worst
—- is an educated guess or conclusion drawn by the reader based on the available facts and information:
Inference.
How to best identify the correct summary answer:
Go through each summary choice and locate the related information or main idea of the passage.
If the summary presents information that is inaccurate, out of order, or not mentioned, then eliminate the choice.
